About City

Dubai is a constituent emirate of the UAE, or United Arab Emirates. Its capital city is also named Dubai. It is the largest city within the federation, housing nearly 90 percent of the emirate's population. It is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates(UAE).It is located on the southeast coast of the Persian Gulf and is one of the seven emirates that make up the country. Dubai has emerged as a global city and business hub of the Middle East and South Asia.  The city of Dubai is located on the emirate's northern coastline and heads up the Dubai-Sharjah-Ajman metropolitan area.

Dubai is the 22nd most expensive city in the world and the most expensive city in the Middle East. It was rated as one of the best places to live in the Middle East by American global consulting firm Mercer. Dubai is to host World Expo 2020.  Dubai has recently attracted world attention through many innovative large construction projects and sports events. The city has become symbolic for its skyscrapers and high-rise buildings..Dubai is also referred to as "the City of Gold" as the Gold Souk in Deira houses due to the touristic approach of many Dubaites in the entrepreneurial sector and the high standard of living.

Dubai has a tropical desert climate because of its location within the Northern desert belt near the line of the Tropic of Cancer. Dubai has been criticized for human rights violations concerning the city's largely South Asian workforce.

The emirate's Western-style model of business drives its economy with the main revenues now coming from tourism, aviation, real estate, and financial services. Dubai is also a hub for service industries such as information technology and finance, with industry-specific free zones throughout the city. Dubai Internet City, combined with Dubai Media City as part of TECOM (Dubai Technology, Electronic Commerce and Media Free Zone Authority), is one such enclave, whose members include IT firms such as Hewlett-Packard, EMC Corporation, Oracle Corporation, Microsoft, Dell and IBM, and media organizations such as MBC, CNN, BBC, Reuters, Sky News and AP. Many international news agencies such as Reuters, APTN, Bloomberg L.P. and Middle East Broadcasting Centre (MBC) operate in Dubai Media City and Dubai Internet city.

Dubai has been called the "shopping capital of the Middle East”. Dubai alone has more than 70 shopping centers, including the world's largest shopping Centre, Dubai Mall. Dubai is also known for the traditional souk districts located on either side of its creek. Many boutiques and jewellery stores are also found in the city. Tourism in Dubai, part of the United Arab Emirates, is an important part of the Dubai government's strategy to maintain the flow of foreign cash into the emirate. Dubai's culture has gradually evolved towards one of luxury, opulence and lavishness with a high regard for leisure-related extravagance. Annual entertainment events such as the Dubai Shopping Festival  (DSF) and Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) attract over 4 million visitors from across the region.

Dubai's lure for tourists is based mainly on shopping, but also on its possession of other ancient and modern attractions. Some of them include its landmark building Burj Khalifa which is the tallest building in the world. There are plenty of water features including the Dubai Fountain, the world's tallest performing fountain, modeled on Las Vegas' famous Fountains of Bellagio, the Burj Al Arab (Tower of the Arabs) is the world's only 7 star hotel and designed to resemble a billowing sail soaring dominating the Dubai skyline making it the fourth tallest hotel in the world. The global village provides excellent cultural entertainment. Other include Bastakia Quarter,Palm Island ,the Dubai Miracle Garden -the world's largest flower garden .

Many modern interpretations of Islamic architecture can be found here, due to a boom in construction and architectural innovation in the Arab World in general, and in Dubai in particular, supported not only by top Arab or international architectural and engineering design firms such as Al Hashemi and Aedas, but also by top firms of New York and Chicago. As a result of this boom, modern Islamic – and world – architecture has literally been taken to new levels in skyscraper building design and technology.
